Calcitone or calcium lactate is used to treat osteoporosis, parathyroid gland disorders, certain muscle problems, and to prevent hypocalcemia. Calcitone is also used for hypophosphatemia, oncogenic hypophosphatemia, osteomalacia, renal tubular osteomalacia, sporadic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, uremic osteodystrophy, and vitamin D dependent rickets. Calcitone works by promoting calcium retention and absorption at the kidneys and intestines respectively, increasing calcium levels.
